The perfect boozy beverage for a cold winter’s night. This blood orange hot toddy is sure to cure whatever ails you.I’m no cocktail blogger. In fact, I think the last time I posted a boozy beverage recipe was this time last year with my vegan Mexican spiced boozy hot chocolate. But I think at least once a year we deserve a cocktail, right?! 😉I was inspired to make a cocktail this week because of the blood orange. Citrus is in-season right now and I can’t get enough! I especially love blood oranges because of their dark, bold, purple/red hue. Now I know, I know, you can cook with blood oranges. And I’ve got a recipe for that soon. But for now, we drink. I originally thought about making a blood orange mojito but we’re in the middle of winter people and Boston just experienced sub zero temps over the weekend so forgive me if I’m not feeling very tropical.
I’ll tell you what I am feeling. Hibernation. Cuddling. Cozying up on the couch with Netflix (and Steve, of course). Burying myself under blankets. And warm cocktails. Like hot toddies. I think the first time I had a hot toddy I was feeling a bit under the weather and someone told me it was nature’s adult cough syrup. I can’t say the drink treated my cold but it surely made me feel a little better for a few hours :).
I do love a hot toddy during the winter. Cold or no cold. It can warm you up on a winter’s night in no time. I’ve only had your standard hot toddy though – bourbon/whiskey, lemon, honey, hot water. I’ve never changed it up from my usual recipe. But I thought why not swap one citrus for another? Blood orange, anyone?
Blood oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C (120% DV!) and packed with the antioxidant anthocyanin, which may help treat/prevent chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer. The recipe is about as simple as it gets: four ingredients. Heat them up in a couple minutes and voila, it’s time to grab the blankets and Netflix.Print

YUM! These look so comforting and cozy- perfect for a cold winter weekend!
You had me at hot toddy! This is not only delicious looking, it is absolutely beautiful!
This reminds me of my Blood Orange Chai Latte! I’m obsessed with blood oranges at the moment, so warming up with one of these is always welcome. 🙂
Yum! I would totally trade you my hot toddy for your chai latte! Sounds delish.
love these photos! They look amazing. This recipe is the perfect evening drink to cozy up with.
Thanks, Julie!! Totally. It put me right to sleep the other night 😉
I always think of winter drinks of being rich and creamy. This looks so beautiful and light. Must try!
Thanks, Katie! So true. But winter drinks can be light and refreshing with the right flavor profile…and temperature!
Once in a year? And you choose whiskey? You are brave! I bet these would be the perfect gender neutral drink to serve though!
Haha obviously the once a year comment was total sarcasm ;). My whiskey/bourbon tolerance is limited LOL. I can only handle them in hot toddies or winter cocktails with warming spices.
These are BEAUTIFUL and so up my alley! Definitely adding to the weekend agenda 🙂
Thanks, Jamie! Hope they bring some warmth & joy to your weekend agenda!
Yummy! I’m going to the snow this weekend and this looks like the perfect drink!
Thanks, Heather! 🙂
