This blood orange hot toddy is sure to cure whatever ails you.I’m no cocktail blogger. In fact, I think the last time I posted a boozy beverage recipe was this time last year with my vegan Mexican spiced boozy hot chocolate. But I think at least once a year we deserve a cocktail, right?! 😉Blood Orange Hot ToddyI was inspired to make a cocktail this week because of the blood orange. Citrus is in-season right now and I can’t get enough! I especially love blood oranges because of their dark, bold, purple/red hue. Now I know, I know, you can cook with blood oranges. And I’ve got a recipe for that soon. But for now, we drink. I originally thought about making a blood orange mojito but we’re in the middle of winter people and Boston just experienced sub zero temps over the weekend so forgive me if I’m not feeling very tropical.

I’ll tell you what I am feeling. Hibernation. Cuddling. Cozying up on the couch with Netflix (and Steve, of course). Burying myself under blankets. And warm cocktails. Like hot toddies. Blood Orange Hot ToddyI think the first time I had a hot toddy I was feeling a bit under the weather and someone told me it was nature’s adult cough syrup. I can’t say the drink treated my cold but it surely made me feel a little better for a few hours :).

I do love a hot toddy during the winter. Cold or no cold. It can warm you up on a winter’s night in no time. I’ve only had your standard hot toddy though – bourbon/whiskey, lemon, honey, hot water. I’ve never changed it up from my usual recipe. But I thought why not swap one citrus for another? Blood orange, anyone?

Blood oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C (120% DV!) and packed with the antioxidant anthocyanin, which may help treat/prevent chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer.Hot Toddy with Blood Orange The recipe is about as simple as it gets: four ingredients. Heat them up in a couple minutes and voila, it’s time to grab the blankets and Netflix.
